Dr Nuoma Afrin Munir

Clinical Lead

Nuoma is a consultant in Acute and General Medicine at Southend University Hospital and brings frontline NHS clinical expertise to EvidentiaMed’s health economics and outcomes research. She advises on the clinical side of economic evaluations, decision-analytic models and systematic reviews. This includes mapping care pathways, checking that model assumptions are clinically plausible, informing resource use estimates and interpreting clinical outcomes, so that the evidence reflects how patients are actually managed in the NHS.

Her clinical work centres on the management of acutely unwell adults, admission avoidance through Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and safe, timely discharge, giving her direct insight into the patient flow and service delivery questions behind many NHS evaluations. She is an RCP-accredited clinical and educational supervisor and has more than a decade of experience in internal and acute medicine in the UK and Bangladesh. She also sits on the East of England Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP) panel for Acute Medicine, where she reviews the progress of higher specialty trainees and determines their outcomes.

Nuoma is an accredited Focused Acute Medicine Ultrasound (FAMUS) supervisor and Focused Ultrasound for Intensive Care (FUSIC) mentor, and trains clinicians in bedside ultrasound of the heart, lungs, abdomen, inferior vena cava (IVC) and peripheral veins. This gives her a detailed understanding of how test performance depends on operator skill and clinical context, which supports EvidentiaMed’s work on diagnostic technologies and test accuracy evidence. Her experience of ultrasound-guided and invasive procedures, and of coordinating multidisciplinary discharge planning, gives her practical knowledge of the staff time and resources behind acute care. Her earlier training in internal medicine and intensive care at Dhaka Medical College Hospital also gives her a clinical perspective on health systems in low- and middle-income settings.
